Using the Canvas Chat Tool
The Chat Tool in Canvas
The Chat tool in Canvas can be used to communicate with members of the class in real time. All chat conversations are public and captured and archived for the entire course. The Chat window acts as a record of all responses sent using the Chat tool. Only the instructor of a course can delete the messages from the Chat window.
The Chat Tool link can be found on the left-hand navigation menu. Be sure you have enabled Chat for your students in the Navigation section of Settings.

Sending Messages using the Chat Tool
To send a message, type into the blank text bar [1] at the bottom of the page. Emojis can be added to messages by selecting from the emoji icon [2]. Hit Enter or click Send [3] to send the message. The timestamped message will appear in the Chat window [4].

Deleting Messages in the Chat
Although the Chat Tool records all messages sent, they can be deleted by the instructor of the course. ONLY the instructor can delete Chat messages.
To delete a message, hover over the message [1] within the Chat window. Select the trash can icon [2] from the right side of the text.

A pop-up window will appear, confirming that the selection is to be deleted.
