AI & Academic Integrity
The University of Oregon is home to a vibrant and diverse intellectual community. Creating a strong culture of academic integrity at UO is a collective, university-wide project--one we are most likely to succeed in when we have a shared understanding of policies and resources. To this end:
- UO updated the "Ducks Have Integrity" module that all incoming students take to include AI and to bolster students' confidence in asking instructors about appropriate use.
- UO updated the Student Conduct Code's definition of "plagiarism" to specify that plagiarism "may include artificial intelligence (AI) content generators and generative AI tools" when use is not cited.
- Our Academic Integrity at UO resources help define and provide suggestions on how to support academic integrity at UO.
UO does not currently support AI detection tools. Student Conduct states that "online AI detection tools like Turnitin.com or GPTZero may not be effective and can result in false positives. If you choose to utilize these tools, please note that [...] we would not consider the percentages provided by these tools as dispositive on their own"
Updated process for potential academic misconduct
Please note that updates to the Student Conduct Code now require all suspected academic misconduct cases that include a grade penalty be handled by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. In other words, instructors should not impose a grade penalty without a finding from that office. Instead, instructors should:
- Use SCCS's Reporting Academic Misconduct Form to submit information and documentation about the alleged incident within five business days of discovery.
- Contact SCCS with questions about academic integrity or other potential student conduct issues in your class at conduct@uoregon.edu or 541-346-1140. SCCS prioritizes contacts from instructors with questions.
