Kimble First-Year Teaching Award

The Kimble First-Year Teaching Award, named in honor of professor emeritus Dan Kimble, is jointly sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Division of Graduate Studies, and the Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success, and administered by the Teaching Engagement Program. The award recognizes outstanding teaching by graduate student instructors who have demonstrated a commitment to inclusive, engaged, and research-led practice. The annual prizes typically are awarded to one first-time lab or discussion section leader and to one first-time sole instructor.

Apply

Applicants must complete the following requirements:

  • Attend a TEP teacher training (Leading Discussion Sections or Leading Labs or Teaching as a Sole Instructor) or at least two TEP workshops or a department-based or other comparable UO teacher training for instruction in higher education. If you did not attend training through TEP, please submit a description of the teacher training you attended, including the number of hours and curriculum for the training.
  • Submit results of the Midway Student Experience Survey (MSES) and the End-of-term Student Experience Survey (ESES) for one course (or section or lab) taught during the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Submit a short reflective commentary no longer than one page on how you used the MSES to make any adjustments in teaching practice.
  • Submit a statement of teaching philosophy (2 pages max.). Teaching statements will be assessed using these criteria. Helpful information about writing a statement of teaching philosophy is found in this article by Kearns and Sullivan. This brainstorming and review handout may also be a helpful tool.

Please complete the online application at the UO Scholarship Database. You'll first be prompted to complete the General Application; once that is complete, you'll find the Kimble Award application under the "Opportunities" tab. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2024. Applications will be reviewed during the summer. Please send only the materials requested; additional materials will not be considered.

For questions about this award or application materials, please contact Jason Schreiner via email at tep@uoregon.edu.
