Organizing and Designing in Canvas for Accessibility
Accessible and Inclusive Design Workshop Series
This series features practices to create more accessible and inclusive classes for students, particularly students with disabilities and/or who are neurodivergent. It centers needs and recommendations students have identified (see the Practitioner Guide: Accessibility) and was developed in consultation with specialists at the Accessible Education Center (AEC). Series facilitators include staff from TEP, UO Online, AEC, and the Library; workshops occur Wednesdays from 1-2 pm throughout the spring term. This series is open to all instructors at any existing level of knowledge and is meant to be a co-learning experience (we’re learning too!).
Session 1: Organizing and Designing in Canvas for Accessibility
This session focuses on “Organizing and Designing Canvas for Accessibility,” which was the #1 recommendation students had in the SES feedback for increasing accessibility! This session will help you learn some of the why, what and how of accessible Canvas practices, including:
- Effectively using modules to organize and orient
- Identifying and applying “wayfinding” principles
- Establishing a consistent file structure
- Identifying and applying other high-impact accessibility practices that apply to Canvas
The “accessibility moves” above save instructors time, mean students can fully engage with your content, are not challenging to do, and apply to every class taught at UO. Join us to apply the highlighted practices and resources to your Canvas courses!
