Developing and Revising Assignments with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Accessible and Inclusive Design Workshop Series
This series features practices to create more accessible and inclusive classes for students, particularly students with disabilities and/or who are neurodivergent. It centers needs and recommendations students have identified (see the Practitioner Guide: Accessibility) and was developed in consultation with specialists at the Accessible Education Center (AEC). Series facilitators include staff from TEP, UO Online, AEC, and the Library; workshops occur Wednesdays from 1-2 pm throughout the spring term. This series is open to all instructors at any existing level of knowledge and is meant to be a co-learning experience (we’re learning too!).
Session 5: Developing and Revising Assignments with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Faculty have reported an increase in requests for accommodations around assignments over the last year. How can we use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to both decrease the time faculty need to spend creating individually designed alternatives and support the learning of all students? This session will share two complementary frameworks for making assignments accessible: UDL and transparent design (TILT) and will share concrete examples of how to use them to both create and revise your assignments.
We encourage you to “bring” (have available on your computer) an assignment you’d like to apply these concepts to and possibly get feedback on!
