UO Online Explores: Teaching with Authenticity

WINTER WORKSHOP SERIES

UO Online invites you to join us as we explore authenticity in the online classroom. Our exploration is motivated by a question: how do we as instructors bring the human dimension into the online classroom?  Throughout our workshop series, we will highlight the pedagogical challenges and opportunities that emerge when humanity and technology coalesce. Our aim is to develop practical and inclusive strategies that will help us engage students of all backgrounds and identities.

In our two workshops on January 19th and February 23rd, we will invite open discussions about how to build an authentic connection to your students, one suited to the standards of your discipline, the modality of your classes, as well as to your personality and identity. In our seminal panel on February 3, we will host a discussion moderated by Troy Elias, Associate Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and Associate Professor of Advertising in the School of Journalism and Communication. He will lead a critical conversation with faculty leaders that explores how to spark student engagement by teaching with authenticity. Please join us!

Feb 23 Workshop: A Pedagogy of Imperfection

Your Presence in Your Classroom

Thursday, January 19th  •  1:30-3:00 pm  •  Tykeson 260

Winter is here, and UO Online Explores has discovered the antidote to student disengagement: you. In this first of three workshop events, we will discuss how to curate a teaching presence fitted to your identity, the needs of your students, and the modality in which you teach. After all, supporting our students means doing more than delivering them content; it means designing and teaching a course where personalized support leads to a more engaging learning experience.  Please join us as we review examples of faculty techniques and develop a few new ones of our own.

Please join us as we delve into the transformative potential of teaching with authenticity.

A Pedagogy of Imperfection

Thursday, February 23rd  •  1:30-3:00 pm  •  Tykeson 260

This workshop explores how embracing the imperfections in your teaching can help you create a closer connection to your students. Please join UO Online to discuss why it can be good to stumble over your words in lecture, leave the unannounced visit from your cat in your videos, and build in spontaneity in your feedback. We will draw from our own experiences to share why these imperfections not only make our teaching feel real and authentic, but also help model for our students the importance of making mistakes to the process of discovery. This event will give you a chance to hear from your colleagues and practice being reflexive about all the peccadillos and happy accidents that make your teaching human.
