Unit Liaisons CAIT: Supporting Unit-Level Responses to Generative AI

As generative AI impacts academic disciplines and professional fields, UO units face important questions about policy, curricula, and student learning. While many faculty have adapted their individual teaching practices, units are increasingly being called upon to develop shared expectations and coordinated responses that reflect disciplinary values, workforce needs, and student experiences.

CAITs (Communities Accelerating the Impact of Teaching) are intensive year-long faculty cohorts that combine collaborative inquiry with ambitious projects designed to benefit the broader teaching community. This CAIT will support academic units as they examine the implications of generative AI for their disciplines and develop policies, curricular frameworks, and learning goals that address both current and emerging realities. Participants will explore evolving disciplinary norms, consider how professional fields are changing, examine student experiences and perceptions, revisit program-level learning outcomes, and consult with colleagues and unit leadership to identify opportunities for meaningful curricular and policy development. By the conclusion of the CAIT, participating units will have drafted and consulted on:

  • Unit policies related to generative AI.
  • Curricular maps identifying where AI-related knowledge and skills are developed within programs (if applicable).
  • Updated program-level learning objectives that reflect evolving disciplinary and professional expectations.
  • Statements on grading and academic integrity in the age of AI.

Participation requires endorsement from the unit head and includes a $1,000 stipend plus OPE. The group will convene in December and then meet about nine additional time across winter and spring meet and present findings to the campus community June 7, 2027.
